CREAMY FRENCH ONION SOUP SERVED IN A CRUSTY SOURDOUGH BREAD BOWL WITH GOLDEN MELTED CHEESE

Ingredients

  • 4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 6 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 small round sourdough bread bowls
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
  • Fresh thyme for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat butter and olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and cook for 35–40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized.
  3. Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  5. Simmer for 20 minutes.
  6. Cut the tops off the sourdough bread bowls and hollow out the centers.
  7. Fill each bread bowl with hot onion soup.
  8. Sprinkle generously with Gruyère cheese.
  9. Place under the broiler for 2–3 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden.
  10. Garnish with fresh thyme and serve immediately.
